A rate notice is a tax bill you can question.

  1. The window is short.

Protest windows are set by each state and often run from the mailing date. Ohio's, for example, is 30 days from mailing.

Source: ORC 4141.26(D)(2). Kreto-computed, not yet checked by a CPA.

  2. The numbers do not always agree.

The rate on the letter, the rate in your payroll software and the rate the schedule gives can differ, and nobody is told which one is right.

  3. Rate notices arrive at a busy time.

Most states mail them near year end, when payroll and tax work peak.
