How SUI Rates Work
Every employer pays State Unemployment Insurance (SUI) tax on wages up to the state's taxable wage base. The rate assigned to each employer depends on their claims experience — either through a reserve ratio or benefit ratio calculation, depending on the state.
New employers with no experience history are assigned a standard new employer rate. Over time, as the state tracks unemployment claims charged against the employer, the rate adjusts up or down within the state's rate range.
In states that allow voluntary contributions, employers can make additional payments to their unemployment trust fund to improve their reserve ratio and potentially qualify for a lower rate in the next year.
Kreto verifies your SUI rate against actual payroll data.
