What Is Kreto? The AI-Powered Compliance Intelligence Platform Explained
A CPA firm with 50 clients receives roughly 750 compliance notices per year. That is 562 hours of manual work at 45 minutes per notice. Kreto reduces that to minutes. Here is how it works.
A mid-size CPA firm in Columbus manages 50 employer clients. Each client receives an average of 15 government compliance notices per year — SUI rate notices, workers comp premium audits, wage and hour investigations, PFML enrollment reminders, IRS CP notices. That is 750 notices per year. At 45 minutes per notice — reading it, looking up the deadline, cross-referencing payroll, deciding on a response strategy — that is 562 hours of staff time annually. At $100 per hour, that is $56,250 in labor for work that is largely mechanical.
Kreto was built to eliminate that mechanical overhead. It is an AI-powered compliance intelligence platform that classifies government notices, verifies them against payroll data, and generates protest letters and response packets. For CPA firms, employers, and payroll bureaus across all 50 US states.
The Problem Kreto Solves
Government compliance notices are heterogeneous. A state unemployment agency sends a rate notice that looks nothing like an IRS CP2100 or a workers compensation premium audit. Each notice type has different deadlines, different response formats, different penalty consequences for missing them.
Most employers handle these notices reactively: a notice arrives, someone figures out what it is, looks up the deadline, and tries to determine whether it requires action. CPA firms do this across dozens of clients simultaneously. There is no systematic way to track deadlines, verify the underlying math, or generate responses at scale.
How Kreto Works: 4 Steps
Step 1: Upload
Upload a government compliance notice — by email, file upload, Gmail integration, or Google Drive connection. Kreto accepts PDFs, scanned images, and email attachments. Google Document AI extracts the text with Claude Vision as fallback for poor-quality scans.
Step 2: Classify
Kreto's classification engine identifies the notice type from 50+ categories across 9 compliance categories. It extracts the key fields: notice date, agency, tax period, assessed amount, response deadline. This happens automatically, without manual data entry.
Step 3: Verify
For notices that involve a monetary claim — SUI rates, penalty assessments, premium audits — Kreto's deterministic calculator verifies the math against connected payroll data. If the state is claiming a rate of 3.2% and your payroll records show wages reported at 2.7%, Kreto flags the discrepancy and calculates the exact exposure.
Step 4: Respond
Kreto generates a protest letter or response packet with the calculated discrepancy, supporting documentation references, and the correct regulatory citation for the state agency. CPAs can review, edit, and approve before sending.
Three Portals, One Platform
CPA Firms: Multi-Client Dashboard
CPA firms see all notices across all clients in a single dashboard. Auto-classification means notices route to the right client automatically. Deadline tracking ensures nothing falls through the cracks. Draft generation means CPAs review and approve rather than write from scratch.
Employers: Self-Service
Employers can manage their own compliance workflow: upload notices, view explanations in plain language, see exactly what the notice is asking for, connect their payroll provider for automatic verification, and act on time. No CPA required for routine notices.
Payroll Bureaus: Bulk Processing
Payroll bureaus processing compliance for hundreds of clients can ingest notices in bulk, process them through Kreto's pipeline, and deliver verified response packets to each employer. SIDES E-Response integration handles UI claims electronically in 47 states.
9 Compliance Categories
Kreto handles notices across all major government compliance categories:
- Unemployment Insurance (SUI/SUTA) — rate notices, claim responses, collections
- Workers Compensation — premium audits, E-Mod calculations, coverage verifications
- Wage and Hour — minimum wage audits, overtime investigations, pay statement issues
- Paid Family Leave (PFML) — enrollment, contribution rate notices, exemption applications
- I-9/Employment Verification — compliance audits, reverification notices
- ACA — employer mandate notices, 1094/1095 verification
- IRS/Federal Tax — CP notices, employment tax issues, backup withholding
- Business Licensing — renewal reminders, new business registration requirements
- Collections/Enforcement — liens, levies, garnishments, demand letters
The Technology
Kreto uses a 5-agent AI pipeline: Ingest (PDF extraction), Classify (notice type identification), Validate (payroll cross-reference), Deadline (date math and alerts), and Draft (response generation). AI does the reading and extraction. Kreto's deterministic calculators do the math. Every calculation is auditable — a CPA can trace every number back to its source data.
State compliance data is verified and updated annually. The 2026 data set covers SUI wage bases, rate ranges, new employer rates, voluntary contribution deadlines, PFML program details, and workers comp monopolistic state rules for all 50 states plus DC.
